Drying Out

Tandem Bike Sketch An unfinished sneak peak of a larger illustration I am working on this week.

***

We are soggy, but (I think) we are finally starting to dry. Last week, the skies spilled more rain than we typically see in a year.

Somehow, my house (despite being 200 feet away from a creek that swelled to fifty times its original size) didn't flood. I feel blessed and grateful beyond words.

Most people that I know in town were not so lucky.

The devastation is heartbreaking. We have a long way to go before things return to normal. If you want to help:

  1. BoulderFloodRelief.org
  2. ImSalvationArmy.org Call 1-800-SAL-ARMY and designate "Colorado Floods."
  3. ColoradoRedcross.org Call 1-800-RED CROSS, or text the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.
  4. United Way Foothills Flood Relief Fund Established to respond to the effects of these storms. Organizers expect to use this fund for immediate relief as well as longer-term recovery in Boulder and Broomfield Counties.

Before the deluge, I had a lot going on. This all seems like ancient history (and rather trivial given recent events), but I want to keep you updated.

The results were tallied for the final round of Lilla Rogers Global Talent Search. Unfortunately, I didn't make the cut.

For all of you who voted, I can't say thank you enough! The outpouring of support from friends, family, and people I don't even know was overwhelming.

Though disappointed, making it to the semi-finals was an unbelievable experience. I learned so much personally and professionally--and I earned some prime-time exposure.

It is all just as it should be.

The talented six who did make it to the final round, deserved to. I personally voted for three of the bags that made it into this next round and I can't wait to see what happens next. If you're interested, the big winner will be revealed on Lilla's blog on October 3rd. Good luck finalists!

My art opening was also a complete success. Thank you to everyone who came out. And if you didn't make it, you have another chance! The show runs through October 26th, and there will be another reception next month:

Artists’ Reception: Backstage Coffee Art Gallery at the Denver Performing Arts Complex on Saturday, October 12, 2013 | 7:30-11:00 pm.
Come out and support me. I would love to see you!

Your Vote Matters

Your Vote Matters to Me If you have already cast your vote, thank you. Thank you! You are awesome!!!

If you haven't quite gotten around to it, the gallery is still up. And I need your support!!

As you know, I am a semi-finalist in a Global Talent Search for Lilla Rogers Studio. In this next round, the 50 semi-finalists will be narrowed down to 6, one of whom will be chosen by a public choice vote.

This is where I need you.

It would mean the world to me if you would take the time (I know you're busy--it won't take long) to visit the public gallery and vote for my submission.

Pretty please. And thank you. I cannot tell you how much your support means to me. For those who missed it, here is my farmer's market tote bag submission:

Sweet Harvest

And don't forget, the opening reception for my art show, Re-Imagine Nation, is tonight!

Opening Reception: Backstage Coffee Art Gallery at the Denver Performing Arts Complex on Friday, September 6, 2013 (First Friday) | 7:30-11:00 pm

Hors d'oeuvres will be available and the bar will be open. I hope to see you there!

The gallery is located at Backstage Coffee in the Denver Performing Arts Complex, across from the Ellie Caulkins Opera House and within walking distance from the Convention Center light rail station.

Big Week: I Need Your Support!!

WorkLifeAngelovic_FinalIllustration_HI My head is spinning right now. I don't really even know where to start...

In what is unquestionably (and by complete coincidence) the biggest week of my artistic career to date, the following three events are all happening over the next several days:

1. Lilla Rogers' Global Talent Search.

Global Talent Search

Tomorrow (September 3) through September 9, the public website goes live with a gallery of artwork submitted by all 50 semi-finalists. An esteemed judging panel will select 5 finalists to move on.

AND... one lucky additional artist will be chosen by a public vote. I need your support and YOUR VOTE!!!! So stay tuned...I will send out the link as soon as I can.

2. The Work/Life 3 Directory of Illustration (compiled and produced by Uppercase).

Work Life 3 Cover

Check out the cool cover artwork, done by the talented Jeff Rogers.

I was selected as one of 100 illustrators from around the world to be featured in this esteemed publication, which includes work from an incredible line-up including (but certainly not limited to) Dinara Mirtalipova, Helen Dardik, Susy Pilgrim Waters, and so many more.

The book is finished and shipping now!! For a sneak peak, check out the book trailer here.

The assignment was to illustrate the following (my response to an interview question about why I chose this particular career path),

“I get this buzz...an electric current of excitement that lights me up from head to toe. I am an illustrator because it makes my soul sparkle.”

You can see my soul sparkling at the top of the page. The book will be sent out to an impressive list of 1000 art directors and advertisers. You can purchase your copy here.

3. I'm having an art show! September 3-October 26, 2013

This afternoon, I'm doing the install for my first art show! Entitled Re-Imagine Nation, and featuring (from the press release) “… delightfully rendered illustrative artworks by Benjamin Wright Coleman, Kelly Angelovic, Mike Geiger and John D. Schultz, poetry recited by Hannah Haddadi and Haven Grey, and live music performed by Josh Meyers, Re-Imagine Nation melds the kindred spirits of visual art, music and the written word."

The Opening Reception is this Friday, September 6th from 7:30 - 11:00 pm in the Art Gallery at the Denver Performing Arts Complex. Please come out to support me! I'd love to see you.

Re-Imagine Nation

Holy Moly!! I think that covers it for this week. I keep having to remind myself to stop and soak up this whirlwind of excitement because the truth is that it all feels incredibly surreal. Like I am on the sidelines watching someone else. Gratitude and awe don't even begin to cover how I'm feeling as I try to wrap my head around all of this.

Wishing all of my fellow semi-finalists (who are surely on pins and needles like me) the very best of luck. Here we go!
